If you've spent any time reading ingredient labels, yours or your customers, you've probably run into a wall of acronyms: SLES, SLS, AOS, and a dozen others that all seem to mean "the stuff that makes soap soapy." You don't need a chemistry degree to stock smart, but understanding what these ingredients actually do (and don't do) makes it a lot easier to answer customer questions with confidence.
This guide breaks down two of the most common cleaning surfactants, SLES and SLS, and looks at a swap you'll see more and more often on ingredient lists: AOS-40.
What's a Surfactant, Anyway?
At its core, a surfactant is a molecule with a split personality: one end loves water, the other end loves oil and grease. That dual nature is what lets a cleaning product lift dirt, oil, and grime off a surface (or your skin) and rinse it away with water. Without surfactants, water and oil just sit next to each other and nothing actually gets clean.
Why Good Formulas Use a Blend, Not Just One Ingredient
No single surfactant does everything well. That's why well-made cleaning and body care products typically combine three types:

SLS, without the extra processing step SLES gets, tends to be harsher and more drying on skin. It’s better suited to rinse-off cleaning products than anything that sits on skin or hair.
The AOS-40 Swap: What You're Actually Trading
A lot of formulators have shifted toward Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate (AOS-40) as a stand-in for SLES or SLS, often marketed as the "cleaner" choice. It’s worth knowing what's really behind that swap:

Not plant-based, despite what others tell you. AOS-40 is currently produced from petroleum feedstocks. You'll often see it marketed as "coconut-derived" or "plant-based," and while a biobased version is theoretically possible, it isn't commercially available on the market today. That claim isn't a gray area, it's a stretch, made by brands chasing a "sulfate-free" label without the supply chain to back it up.

Cheaper, but not for sustainability reasons. AOS-40 has gotten less expensive lately due to crude oil prices being low, its popularity increasing, and its production process skips the extra dioxane-removal step SLES requires. It’s a cost advantage tied to oil markets, not a sourcing or sustainability win.

Mildness is mixed. AOS-40 is gentler than straight SLS, but it isn't milder than SLES. Particularly the more common, higher-processed SLES grades already used in most quality formulas.

A Question Worth Asking

It's not because they don't care about sulfate free claims, or that they're ignorant about what options are available on the market. Rather, they care more about being plant based and they know better than to make false claims.
So Is AOS-40 the "Better" Swap?
Not automatically. It dodges the dioxane conversation and supports "sulfate-free" marketing claims, but it does so by trading a plant-based ingredient for a petroleum-based one, without a real gain in mildness or cleaning performance. That's a meaningful trade-off, not a clear upgrade, and it's definitely not a coconut-based one.
The bigger takeaway for stocking decisions: "free-from" claims sound good on a shelf tag, but they don't always tell the full story. A well-formulated SLES product with verified low dioxane levels can be every bit as clean, mild, and responsible a choice as one built around AOS-40, sometimes more so.
When you're vetting a supplier or fielding a customer question, the most useful thing you can ask isn't "does it have sulfates?" It's "where does this actually come from, and what's the trade off?"
